California is the coldest place on earth, at least in my experience. During my junior year of high school, I went on a field trip to Catalina Island, a short ferry ride from L.A., at the end of March. I froze the whole time. It didn’t matter whether I was wearing a wetsuit while snorkeling in the ocean, talking with friends in our tiny cabin, or sitting on the deck in the sun. I never got warm.
Last week, I had the privilege of attending the North American Association for Environmental Education conference in Oakland, California, thanks to my employer for my second job and a grant from NOAA. At the conference, I got to learn and be inspired, catch up with Ohio friends, and eat Italian pastries made purely from sugar (at least they tasted that way). But let me reiterate. California is the coldest place on earth. The only time I was warm was when I woke up in the mornings after being under a comforter for eight hours. In fact, I not only wore sweaters at the conference. I wore a sweatshirt OVER my sweaters. And was still cold.
I am very happy to be back in Florida.
Speaking of sweaters, it’s because of my second job that I’ve been going on a little shopping spree. My husband likes to say “use special money for special things”, and he sees the income from my second job as special money. I’m choosing to interpret special things as clothes 🙂
I just bought a cream cable knit v-neck sweater that feels soft and cozy. My aversion to cold weather definitely doesn’t extend to cold weather clothes. And in Florida, I may even get a couple weeks’ wear out of it this winter!
What are your favorite cold weather clothes?
